Current Personnel
Howard Rundle IV (he/him) (e-mail)
(Yes, I am the fourth Dr. Howard Rundle in the family, although two were only medical doctors.) Professor, uOttawa (2016); Canada Research Chair (Tier 2; 2006-2016); PhD, University of British Columbia (2001); MSc, University of British Columbia (1997); Hon. BSc, University of Toronto (1995) Check out my departmental webpage here (it's not very interesting though). If you really want to see my CV, you can find a somewhat up-to-date copy here. |
Kevin Kwok, PhD candidate (e-mail)
Kevin came to the lab from an MSc out west working with Rob Laird (U. Lethbridge) on inducible defenses in the sunflower, Helianthus annuus. Now that he has seen the entomological light, his PhD is addressing the contribution of male mate preferences to speciation in the D. recens/D. subquinaria system and the evolution of male seminal fluid proteins under treatments that manipulate the opportunity for mate competition. |
Li Yun, PhD candidate (e-mail)
Li received his MSc from the U. Toronto during which he started a long-term evolution experiment in D. melanogaster to test the effect of mate competition on adaptation to three different novel abiotic environments using three different mating treatments that manipulated the opportunity for mate competition (i.e . monogamy vs polygamy) and the environment in which mate competition occurs (a small, structurally simple environment vs a larger, structurally more complex environment). Li is continuing to work on these populations for his PhD with the goal of further characterizing the effects of mate competition. Li is co-supervised by Aneil Agrawal (U. Toronto). |
Chris Angell, PhD candidate (e-mail)
Chris arrived in Sept. 2016 and has begun working on a few projects using male antler flies including a study of potential factors impacting actuarial and reproductive senescence in the lab and field, and quantifying sexual selection (as arising from both intra- and intersexual competition) on contact pheromones. |
Tania Barrera, PhD candidate (e-mail)
Tania did a one-semester exchange in our lab as an undergraduate in 2017 and then in Sept. 2018 begin a PhD under the joint supervision of myself and Aneil Agrawal (U. Toronto). She is physically based out of the Agrawal lab in Toronto. Her thesis research addresses the evolution of intersexual genetic correlations using populations from a long-term evolution experiment in D. melanogaster. |
Will Jarvis, PhD candidate (e-mail)
Will arrived from an MSc with Beren Robinson at Guelph looking at habitat and resource use in sunfish. He's hoping to use natural populations of D. subquinaria to study G-matrix divergence for CHCs (phermones) within the content of character displacement/reinforcement (i.e. between populations that are sympatric vs allopatric with D. recens), and is also exploring how CHCs evolved in an evolution experiment testing reinforcement that was performed in Kelly Dyer's lab (UGA). |
Tristan Ducharme, MSc candidate (e-mail)
Tristan came to us from a undergraduate degree at the Univerity of Toronto. For his MSc, he is studying the quantiative genetics of behaviour in Drosophila. In particular, he studying indirect genetic effects in male terrirotiality, and is working on designing a high-throughput phenotyping system that will allow him to quantify the effect of varying resource size on the magnitude and nature of IGEs. It's a cool project! Tristan is co-supervised by Vincent Careau (uOttawa). |
Cameron Kendrick, MSc candidate (e-mail)
Cameron did his undergraduate degree here at uOttawa and decided to stay for a MSc, which we're very happy about! His project is addresses the alignment of natural and sexual selection, testing whether adaptation to abiotic environments confers greater reproductive success on males. He is taking advantage of some of the populations from a long-term evolution experiment we have been running in D. melanogaster. |
